ok had my gtt test a few weeks ago and we were all talking iin the day room about cravings mine is ice cubes and they all looked in horror at me and said omg have you said somehting to midwife? no its just a craving they all said it was a major sign i was lacking in minerals and taell sumone straight away ive googled it and get conflicting answers help

PenguinsHatchedAnEgg Mon 23-Jun-14 14:09:56

Sorry, I'm a wee bit confused, you mean you were talking to other people waiting for their test and they said ice cubes was a worrying craving? Not that you spoke to the people doing the GTT test?

I have not heard anything either way regarding ice cube cravings, but if you are worrying then yes, the sensible course is to speak to your MW and get a professional answer. smile

It can be a sign of anemia. I went through boxes of ice pops and ice cubes with my pregnancies and had anemia each time.

Only from personal experience, I craved ice intensely with dd, to the point I took ice cubes in sandwich bags on the car journey to hospital in labour. midwife was never bothered, some people suggested an iron deficiency but I didn't have one. Only problem is, I cracked 2 teeth in the process. That wouldn't have put me off though. It gradually went away in the week after she was born.

Scoobsmam13 Mon 23-Jun-14 14:19:23

I got this with DD, but I wasn't anaemic, I think with me it was more to do with the stinking heat (she was a sept baby). I ate them walking round the supermarket. Ice lollies too!
Speak to your m/w if you are worried tho. I think there are other signs if it is anaemia.

Ice cubes were the only way I could stayed hydrated without throwing up in both pg!

Nomio23 Mon 23-Jun-14 14:34:14

Hi there,

My Dad, (who obviously wasn't pregnant) used to practically live on ice cubes. He was subsequently diagnosed as being severely anaemic, and told that eating the ice probably saved his life. No idea how!

I would advise you to speak to your Dr or midwife immediately.

Sorry, just realised that might all sound a bit scary. Not how I mean to come across, but I would hate for you to not get the advice you need.

arghhelpme Mon 23-Jun-14 14:55:46

I craved ice cubes with both dc. Have been on the ice lollies and ice cubes again with this pregnancy. Had no complications with ds1 and 2 and everything seems fine this time round.

May have something to do with being anaemic but I think I have always been slightly anaemic even when not pregnant.

If you are concerned speak to your midwife to get your bloods done.

Ice cube cravings can be linked to anaemia. BIL has problems with iron and can always tell when it's getting worse as he craves ice cubes.

Are you actually craving ice cubes though? Or are you just eating them because it's hot and they are convenient? I've been eating lots of ice lollies but just because it's summer, if I was pregnant in winter no doubt I'd be downing hot choc!

frankiebuns Mon 23-Jun-14 22:56:45

I'm literally craving them I can't make em quick enough! Id rather drink and eat ice cubes than food! I was rather partial with ds but not this bad! my poor h2b has to make up 3 bags in the morning and put freezer on fast freeze so when I get up I can rip it open and start munching, I've brojen one tooth already but need em

SqutterNutBaush Mon 23-Jun-14 22:59:05

I had this with both pregnancies.

First i was anaemic second was down to dehydration.

Howstricks Mon 23-Jun-14 23:04:06

I had this with all mine. Was not anaemic and dcs were healthy as they come. It is a common pregnancy craving. Spend no more time worrying. (Your routine bloods would bring up any issues with anaemia as would tiredness, paleness inside eye lids etc etc..) There are lots of pregnancy myths in the coffee lounge.

WaffleWiffle Mon 23-Jun-14 23:06:26

I'm on my third pregnancy craving ice. Nothing wrong, no big deal, just a craving for me.

Currently chomping through 1 2kg bag of ice per day

Mango92 Thu 26-Jun-14 01:08:10

Don't listen. It's summer and its a warm one.
My iron levels are fine but I go through a bag of ice in 2 days!

It refreshes me and cools me down. Also stops me drinking a ton of water when in thirsty and making myself sick.
it is not always a sign that there is something wrong.

somedizzywhore1804 Thu 26-Jun-14 01:23:12

39 weeks here and ice has been one of my two cravings (artichokes is the other- although never together! grin)

I am quite severely anemic. I also have HG. But both things have (obviously) been picked up and treated throughout the pregnancy. The anemia link is apparently to do with oxygen. Because you're lacking in iron your blood doesn't oxygenate the cells in your body as well as it should so ice- where oxygen is trapped in the water as a natural part of the freezing process- is a quick fix. The HG/dehydration Element is obvious. I don't think it's a massive worry. Your routine bloods will flag up any issues.

Re the teeth thing, I've been paranoid about this and my solution is to whizz it up in the food processor so it's more like chips of ice. God that stuff is delicious.

VenusDeWillendorf Thu 26-Jun-14 02:40:12

Anaemia.

Get spatone, and have a blood test. They might prescribe GalferFA which is iron with folic acid (helps your body make haemoglobin), but can make you bunged up, so you'll need to eat prunes as well.

Good luck with it, and hope you get it sorted.

VenusDeWillendorf Thu 26-Jun-14 02:43:45

Somedizzy, artichokes craving could indicate a fat metabolism problem, as they act like bile in the body. You may have developed gall stones, so if you get really bad colic after the baby is born, don't dismiss it, but ask your GP to send you for an ultra sound.
It's common enough for post pregnancy bodies to get gall stones and also kidney stones as so much changes with a pregnancy.

mrssprout Thu 26-Jun-14 02:45:19

Another one here saying I crave ice cubes if I am anaemic & not just me. Mine isn't related to pregnancy but a medical condition & quite a few people on the forum I go on say they crave ice cubes when anaemic too. Might be worth a check next time you are talking to your dr

SourSweets Thu 26-Jun-14 08:27:25

I craved ice and ice lollies like mad. I was a bit anaemic but fine.

stylingmaternity Thu 26-Jun-14 12:33:47

I practically lived on my freeze pops for the 1st trimester of my 2nd pregnancy, think it is a fairly common craving

MamaDoGood Thu 26-Jun-14 12:37:54

This was my craving with DS2 and I don't usually have ice in drinks due to sensitive teeth !

I was anaemic.

jimijack Thu 26-Jun-14 12:39:56

Me too. They couldn't freeze quickly enough so I used to send dh to McDonald's to get me cups full of ice.
Nowt wrong with me, healthy as a horse and so was ds (now aged 11 & strappingly healthy).

This time round it was a 9 month Cadbury diet......not good as I had a 3 stone weight gain.
