Does Drinking Diet Coke Cause Hair Loss

can artificial sweeteners cause hair loss?Diet sodas have had a mixed reputation over the years. While many people love the perceived guilt-free drink, there is an artificial sweetener in the ingredients of many diet drinks still used today called aspartame.

Ever since its introduction in the 1970's, aspartame has been under scrutiny for its potentially hazardous side effects. Some people have suffered anxiety attacks, headaches, insomnia, depression, and other side effects as a result of aspartame intake. Could another side effect be hair loss?

Do Artificial Sweeteners Cause Hair Loss?

While there are studies that do link aspartame intake to hair loss, the exact reasons why are uncertain. There just happens to be a very strong correlation between the two. It is possible that heavy diet coke intake could also be indicative of a poor overall diet which could potentially affect your hair health as well.

There are many other artificial and alternative sweeteners used in soft drinks and other foods and beverages including:

  • Stevia
  • Splenda
  • Truvia
  • Sucralose
  • Erythritol
  • and Saccharin

The side effects for all artificial sweeteners vary. For example, saccharin has had side effects in some people including headaches and skin problems. Depending on where those skin problems develop, you could experience hair loss.

Even stevia – which is considered a more natural alternative sweetener – has side effects in some people including numbness, dizziness, and muscle pain. If you feel you are experiencing any of these kinds of side effects as a result of artificial or alternative sweeteners you are consuming, it would be advisable to stop having them.

Can Sugar Cause Hair Thinning?

Believe it or not, high sugar intake can cause hair thinning. High sugar intake causes a spike in your blood sugar, which in turn spikes the androgens in your blood. These hormones can bind to your hair follicles and damage them leading to hair thinning or androgenetic alopecia.

Can a Bad Diet Cause Alopecia?

A bad diet can definitely cause alopecia. On the bright side, making changes to your diet can potentially reverse the damage. Certain foods and additives including sugar cause inflammation, and inflammation increases the symptoms of autoimmune diseases such as alopecia. Oils, eggs, alcohol, coffee, dairy, and even some vegetables could cause inflammation.

Having gluten in your diet when you are gluten intolerant could cause inflammation as well. By making adjustments to your diet, you may be able to stop the effects of alopecia. Adding supplements like probiotics could help as well.
